The. Sheriff. Found. Dad.
Four words that forever changed my life when I heard them on Friday July 8, 2011.
It was 7:30 in the evening. The sun was setting on a hot summer day, and as everyone around me prepared for a weekend spent cooling off, with any activity that included water, my world was forever changed.
At my Dad’s memorial service, I started to get a complete picture of the man that he was beyond just being my Father, because although he’d been retired for 13 years, his co-workers showed up in droves to speak of a man they had admired working alongside.
Perhaps the best story I heard was of an account in the mid-90’s, where upper management was forcing my Dad to lay off a woman who had a special needs child, and without blinking an eye, my Father went to her defense, saving her job. Saving as many jobs as he could in the 1990’s, when the defense industry struggled, was a challenge. And yet, despite working long hours at a hard job, my father always saved his best for my sister and I.
One of the best gifts my father gave me, was his time, and with his time, he taught me how, as an adult to play, simply for the sake of play. That element, that without it, may keep me from living the life I’m yearning for.
